Well months and months ago i ordered 50 oak mantels to come into stock in a unwaxed version of our Large Corbel Mantel and also and unwaxed version of the Edinburgh.
This has been done because i have never been 100% happy with the waxed finish they previously had applied to them, im a big stickler for things being right and to wax oak is criminal and customers feedback tells us they prefer our oiled finish.
The oiled finish allows the wood to be seen in all its glory and oak is a beautiful timber and to hides its colours and markings with stains and wax is just wrong.
These mantels are not ones we manufacture and believe it or not they are made in China they are quite intricate and the finish on them is superb far better than many other timber mantels we have bought in the past before undertaking our own manufacture.
So these mantels are being collected next week and will be on our website as fast as we can after Daz has oiled a few of them for stock.
We take great pride in what we do here at Castfireplaces and our attention to detail getting things how they should be is second to none.
So come along and see these two new mantels in all the finish that really shows of the beauty of solid oakand those that do wax them should be ashamed of themselves

Not having a chimney breast and wanting a traditional style cast iron fireplace with a timber mantel does present a few problems, the simplest matter of solving this is to construct a false chimney breast of around 6.5″ deep to house the back for the cast iron fireplace.
Our customer had ordered a Henley and Oak Bedford Fireplace Package with an electric fire thinking it can be used on a flat wall which im afraid is not the case.
When it came to fitting the fireplace they soon realised this could not be done so rang us for some advice, they did not want to construct a false chimney breast thinking it would come out to much in a small room so i suggested a chunky mantle with deep sides and a large shelf to house the cast fireplace in this.
After a few emails a price was agreed which was at cost price from us to help them out of a hole and the mantel was manufactured i must admit it did look a little odd have 8.5″ sides and no rebate but when the cast was placed inside it did look the part in housing the fireplace.
It has been delivered today and the original collected and taken back into stock im pretty sure they will be pleased with the results when they come to fit it.
Everything is possible here at Castfireplaces and we can normally supply what others can not or dont wish to do thats what makes us the number one place to shop online

The Oak mantels we sell on our website are finished how oak should be finished some of our competitors wax oak, now why the hell would you do this Oak is one of the finest woods around and to wax it should be a crime.
Nothing shows the features better of an oak surround than oil it then simple enhances the natural beauty of the wood and mkaes them look fantastic.
Its also very simple for our customers to do as oak does need feeding and will ne re-oiling once a year to keep the wood looking its best.
So what do we use very simple and available for you to buy from B&Q we now use B&Q own brand teak oil, we used to buy a fancy expensive finishing oil by Liberon but have found this alternative to be just as good in finish and so much easier to apply as its alot thinner.
The finishing of an oak surround is a more time consuming than pine as it needs a few coats to build up the surface and patina, when manufactured by us they are sanded to a finish so they can be ready for the first coat of oil.
This is applied with a clean cloth and left to dry normally about 30 minutes as the first coat is quickly soaked into the timber, we wire wool the mantel down between each coat using 0000 grade polishing wool and then all the dust is cleaned off with another cloth and a further coat of oil applied.
Depending on the finish achieved and how porous the wood is sometimes two coats be enough but if not just wire wool again and reapply oil.
After this has been done the mantel is nice and smooth and ready to go.
When reapplying the oil at home just start with the wire wool and then apply one coat of oil this will be enough and just let it soak into the wood and the job is done.
You will now have an oak mantel looking as good as the day it was delivered from Castfireplaces

Here at Castfireplaces we manufacture most of our timber or wooden fireplaces that we sell via our showroom and also via our website.
The oak ones are oiled which i will explain more about tomorrow but the pine mantels we sell are stained and waxed with our secret recipe stain and Morrells Morewax.
So a customer rang us last week asking what we used on our timber mantels as they want to match two pine doors they have purchased to the colour of our mantel.
So what do we use its not really a secret
We use our own base stain which we mix ourselves to a tried and tested ratio, we use van dyke crystals which when mixed with hot water disslove and topped up with cold water into the strength that we use.
We can supply our customers with some stain for you to use so you can achieve the same colour and look, there really are no laquers or orange pine here its not what we do.
So with 1 coat of stain applied and brushstrokes removed with a clean rag it is then left to dry and then the wax can be applied.
We use Morells med brown which in my opinion is the best available forget Briwax and Fiddes we have used the all and this beats them hands down.
It goes on simply and is easily buffed to the required sheen, for use in our Workshop we use 20L tins but also sell on our website a 400 gram tin which is more than enough for 4 surrounds or a couple off doors which our customer wanted to do.
Thats it really thats how its done and you too can achieve the same finish we get here at Castfireplaces on all our pine wooden mantels simple as that.

Well another busy week ahead of us here at Castfireplaces both in the factory, showroom, office and workshop.
Rhian is in charge of all the invoices etc and im trying to add all the new fireplaces to our website along with being at the factory and showroom showing customer the range of fireplaces that we sell.
So last week has seen a run on Oak Surrounds or mantels as they are otherwise known so much so that when we had finished sorting out this weeks delivery runs i have found ourselves out of stock of 51″ and 54″ Oak Lincoln Mantels This is very unusual for us here at Castfireplaces to run out of things and seeing as we manufacture the surrounds ourselves is a little embarassing.
Its simply sorted and Darren is now underway manufacturing some pretty quickly so once again we have them back in stock for them leaving our factory for customers new homes this week.
Its a good job really i have let stcok levels on timber mantels fall a little whilst its Summer but this has prompted me to increase manufature levels to ensure we have them all in stock.
As most people know we do have collections of our fireplaces from our Langley Mill premises so to run out is not acceptable right thats my reminder done im now off to plan delivery route for North West Run on Thursday bye for now

Here at Castfireplaces most of you will know we offer Wooden fireplace packages and stock both timber mantels in Pine and Solid Oak.
This range we have is due to be increased and i have spent most of today changing things on our wooden fireplaces section and also adding some new products to make our range of solid oak fireplaces and timber fireplaces one of the largest online.
We never stop searching for new fireplace products that we feel will compliment our current range and offer something different.
We are not ones just to sell a cheap nasty arch with our fireplace packages to make them appear cheap, there are many companies online that do this and if you read the listings its there in small print but they show a gallery fireplace in the picture.
Here at Castfireplaces we only sell Genuine Gallery and Carron fireplaces and never use misleading photos what you see on screen is the fireplace that will arrive.
Anyway this new range of oak fireplaces are ready to go live tomorrow or Wednesday as part of our new template design to the wooden fireplace section.
It was supposed to be last week but i never had time to finish it off and make it perfect which is how like things.
So keep checking back and im sure you will find castfireplaces will have the perfect oak or indeed wooden fireplace for you no matter what style you are after

Now as some of you will know we had a photo day around three weeks ago where we photographed some new oak fireplace mantels with various different arched and tiled fireplaces.

Castfireplaces do sell Wooden Fireplaces and they have there own section here on our website and one of the most popular items we sell.
They used to be the most popular by far until the introduction of the Limestone surround which are now our best sellers.
There is nothing more traditional looking than a fireplace with a waxed wooden mantel, the strange thing is the Victorians never waxed timber mantels they were always painted as it was considered a cheap alternative to Marble and Slate.
How times change we still supply a few mantels untreated ready for customers to paint but the majority of our timber surround are sent out oiled or waxed.
So with the addition of our new oak mantels we now have one of the most comprehensive range online and all of them will soon be available to purchase on there own too in our timber mantels section.
So take a look round our wooden fireplaces range and as most of these mantels are made by castfireplaces you can have these made to measure too in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit any existing fireplace you have.
With choices of timbers from Oak and Pine mainly we can alos undertake bespoke work in any timber you require just please enquire by email or phone.

When ordeing a limestone fireplace we include a free limestone sealer and for the wooden fireplaces we now include a set of 4 concelaed brackets to mount your timber surround.
There are numerous ways of fixing a timber surround whether they are fixed in place using an adhesive or mounted on a wall using mirror plates.
The best items we have found are concealed brackets which we also have for sale on our website at £4.95 a set these include screws to be attached to the timber mantel but yo will need to purchase fixing brackets to your walls whether screws and rawplugs or plasertboard plugs etc.
So these are now included in all wooden fireplace packages purchased from us so you can be sure you have everything you need to enable your insatller to fit your fireplace for you.
The brackets we supply are completly hidden behind the timber surround which simply lifts upwards to remove it so its ideal if you want to decorate around the fireplace it can simply be removed.
There is no need to seal the timber surround to the wall as its purely for decorative purposes only so can simply be removed when required.

Well what a day i knew i should not have tried to fit it in on a Friday and especially after a late night at the City Ground watching Forest struggle.
So today apart from loading one of our vans for an hour i have spent the day with Adam from our suppliers taking photographs of Fireplaces some with existing timber surrounds we sell and also a brand new range of oak mantels we have coming to our website.
This does not sound to much like hard work but after a few hours my arms were aching as fireplaces are very heavy and so are the solid oak mantels but luckily as it was chippy friday we did have a break.
So we know have over 70 new fireplace packages to be listed on our website which i will get round to later next week as we have something being done at our showroom Monday which will also be featuring on our website very soon.
So im now sat in the office at 7pm wriitng articles for our website and raising Stuarts Delivery notes for Sunday.
Im glad to say im off work this weekend and im really looking forward to alie in it seems to have been nonstop again this week.
Still i must not moan many people are quiet but we have plenty to do
Right off out for an hour with the dog to relax
