A stone fireplace will enhance the look of any home. It will serve as a focal point as it is an architectural feature in its own right. Here are a few of the different types of stone that are used.
Agean limestone
Limestone mantels will generally be made from Agean limestone. This stone is millions of years old and each piece is unique, having its own pattern and character. Portuguese limestone is also often used.
Carrara marble
As with limestone, the great strength of marble is the individuality of each piece. Carrara marble is naturally cream in colour with veins of Grey running through it. It is an exquisite material to use for a fireplace.
Granite
A granite hearth is the base for many fireplaces. It is used in a single slab when combined with a gas or electric fire, but cut into sections for a solid fuel fire. Strong, robust and scratch resistant, it is perfect for the hearth.
Jura Stone
This is a way of making use of unappealing sheets of marble. The stone is covered with one of two different finishes to give different effects, but both will still feel like real stone.
