A visitor to our showroom today in Langley mill had come to look at various types of wooden mantels we manufacture at Castfireplaces and was interested in our Pine Bedford Mantel.
We do have this on display in our showroom as it is one of the most popular wooden mantels we sell.
Available from stock in 42″ 48″ and 54″ sizes it fits a vareity of arched and tiled inserts so when thay came over this morning they were keen to see it in both sizes to check if it overpowered there small room.
So after looking at the diagram and drawings along with photos of their chimney breast (very well prepared i must say) we discussed having a 51″ mantel made as the chimney breast was only 55″ and they were not to keen on having only half an inch either side of the mantel shelf but thought 48″ was too small.
Nothing at Castfireplaces is too much trouble so after explaining the details of manufacture and what we would change on the mantel to achieve the 51″ shelf an order was placed there and then with the gorgeous Henley arched insert.
So i told them two weeks for it to arrive to them and the said they were amazed as fireplace shop in Leics had told them 4 weeks for even the stock size Bedford.
I explained they must buy them in which meant them coming from the supplier and then to them for delivery but as we make them ourselves the delivery time would be far shorter even for made to measure and if it was stock itme we could have delivered it Thursday.
So another very happy customer on his way and happy he made the effort to come and see us at Castfireplaces as he got what suits his home best

Friday, August 13th, 2010First off before you think about ordering a made to measure granite or tiled hearth have alook through our Hearths Section to make sure we do not have a stock size that is a few cms or inches off the size you require.
Stock size hearths are considerably cheaper than made to measure and for it being a little larger or smaller could save you time and money.
So you have had a look and there is nothing suitabl don’t dispair we can manufacture exactly the right size you need in Granite,Tiled Slate etc.
The main reason for made to measure hearths are either to replace hearth within a room that is carpeted or you have a consructional hearth laid level with your floorboards and standard hearth will not cover it.
Another common reason is a sub hearth for a stove to sit on where there has never been a hearth and it needs to match the front one.
Ok were ready to go then decide on waht size you want your new hearth to be either to cover the hole in your carpet or to extend over the constructional hearth
The Dimensions we require are
A Width
B Depth
C Height
Most hearths are simple three measurements and normally the hearths are made as standard at 50mm in height for normal use there should be no reason to later this
Just bear im mind that granite hearths are boxed and lipped that means the top section overhangs the front and the sides by 10-15mm so if hearth is required to cover cooncrete base take this inot consideration
Alsp if using for solid fuel your granite hearth will be in sections and rejoined so it can expand and contract with the heat from a real fire it has to be done or it will crack if in one solid piece.

How do i measure Made to Size Fireplace Mantel
Thursday, August 12th, 2010Ok so you know you need a made to measure fireplace mantel and your not 100 % sure how to find out exactly what size you require lets see if we can help you out a bit so you can then contact our office in confidence
First off you need to measure the chimney breast of where the fireplace is going this is the main factor in the size of your mantel.
Then decide what your using it for is it to go round a fireplace etc or is it it fitting flush to the chimney breast to surround a stove etc.
All these details are important for rebate sizes etc we will work these out for you do not worry about those.
Ok on to the design have a look through any brochure, magazine or website to find the design you like.
We can manufacture any style and design in any wood you choose the choices are endless.
Right dimension time we need to know a few things in relation to what you are after the most important are shown on the diagram below so we can then make sure everything looks right and we also can see if it will work ok.
It is not as daunting as it sounds fireplace mantels are very simple in design basically and have few sections to measure so if you have the dimensions below to hand it makes it very simple to work out.
Most mantels are normally slight variations to stock sizes so have a check through and contact us if you are unsure.

Made to measure hearths very popular
Tuesday, July 13th, 2010Here at Castfireplaces most of you will know we do offer made to measure service in granite, slate and tiles for all our hearth options and its always very popular with our customers.
Now recently we have had a few people order items and ask if they can collect or have the items delivered within a few days.
When we do made to measure items its around 5-10 days depending on how busy they are at the workshop to get the items manufactured.
When using for solid fuel they also have to be slabbed and then left to dry which takes a while longer, so although we do have a quick turn around on the hearths please do not order and then try and arrange collection or delivery for the same week as normally it can not be done in such short time.
I understand you sometimes are in a rush but theres not much we can do about it im afraid made to measure is what it says we never alter stock sizes we always cut from new sheets.
So if you do require a made to measure hearth send us an email stating sizes which material and whether it is for Gas, Electric or solid fuel use.
We will return with a quote for you as soon as we can and then if you allow around 2 weeks for manufacture and delivery all will arrive in good time.
Can we do made to measure Granite Hearths
Friday, February 12th, 2010Hi all another busy day again with deliveries to Torquay and Middlesborough two vans though not 1 big run ive had the easy Middlesborough run Stuart has been to Torquay and worked his way home with seven drops i only had four.
Anyway when i got back to the office i answered a few made to measure Hearth emails which we do have quite frequently infact now every other day but there were four of them wanting prices within a couple of hours which is very unusual.
All of them were for solid fuel ranging from a small sectional hearth for a multi fuel stove to sit on to a large 64″ x 18″ hearth for an original marble surround.
Anway all of them have been emailed back with prices and manufacture times and writing this at 20.25 we have had an order all ready for a box flusehed hearth.
Thats the joy of made to measure items and indeed hearths you dont have to put up with standard hearth not covering the constructional hearth or where existing flooring has been laid up to a hearth you are replacing you can have what you want in any size you want.

Oak Fireplace Surrounds Can i add my own Carving
Thursday, February 11th, 2010Having supplied a Wooden Fireplace Package to a customer of ours back in December 2007 he contacted me today to discuss an idea he has of incorporating an oak carving he has of birds etc into one of our Oak surrounds.
It turns out he has moved house as the fireplace he had before was pine large corbel and he has been visiting our website for a new fireplace he wants.
Anyway after enquiring what we can do for him he again wants a solid fuel package and likes our Oak Stourhead mantel and has this idea to fit a carving from an old Bureau into the mantel panel.
Anyway after discussion we said it can be routed into the panel by around 12mm as this carving was an old drawer front and is around 34″ wide.
He was going to try fitting it himself but as we make the mantels it would be easier for him to send template of this carving by post so we can cut that into the oak mantel after making freize deeper so it looks in proportion.
It makes sense for us to do it before assembly as it gives us more room to work round it without the mantel shelf getting in the way.
So off he has gone to make the template after adjusting the carving so hopefully we get the order as its something different to manufacture instead of just our normal surrounds, i will keep you informed
There are not many companies who would go to the trouble to do this but we do making sure the customer gets what they want is one of our priorities
Made to Measure Fireplace Surrounds how long do they take
Thursday, December 10th, 2009Today i have been asked if we can do made to measure Bedford Surround unwaxed and delivered to Truro Cornwall by Friday.
Now this is really to much short notice and the Customer seemed surprised when i said it would not get delievered until January they actually said well why can’t you make it Monday and deliver it Tuesday or Wednesday.
Now 1st off do they think we are sat twiddling our thumbs at the busiest time of year waiting for orders to come through and seeing as they are 302 miles way from us too even if we could have made it in time how could we possibly go down there with just one surround.
Now we do try our best to juggle things round to help our customers but this really is a step to far and they honestly did seem annoyed when i told them it could not be done.
So it just goes to show how ever hard we try we just can’t please everyone.
So if ordering a made to measure Timber Surround or Hearth please allow a couple of weeks to get it ready for you and bear this in mind when placing your order.
As i have said before if we can get it done we will just like Peter from a building company in East London who ordered a Valencia 21″ firebasket and gas insert and needed it tomorrow to fit in customers house it is now on a carrier and being delivered before 12 o’clock so they can complete the job. So as you can see we will try and make sure your fireplace items get delivered when you want them most of the time.
