How much should i pay for fireplace installation

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

I have had a customer ring me today and ask how much they should pay for a fireplace to be installed and whether we could fit the fireplace for her.
I asked where abouts she was and Plymouth came the reply, now thats a little far for our local fitter to travel too we do operate within a 100 mile radius of us in Ripley Derbyshire and any further afield we use a good network of fitters we have approved to make sure the job gets done correctly.
Now there is no set standard price for fitting a new fireplace or stove as it depends on how much work has to be done to your chimney breast to fit the new fireplace.
The more work you do yourself including removing the original the cheaper it will become and we always say to our customers to expect to pay around £250 to £400 for a typical fireplace fitting charge.
Now some people will gasp at that price and say is he there all week but with courses for gas safe and Hetas costing 100s of pounds each year its pretty reasonable i think.
What you can be assured of when using a registered fireplace fitter is that it will be installed correctly and you will be given the correct compliance certificate.
So please avoid the DIY masters and the local builder who says i can install that for you it really is not worth the risk, so if you are within our fitting radius give us a call if not we can give you a nuymber for someone who will fit it for you

Kooga clean burn stoves are due in stock in March

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

On our website we have had a stove listed since we first had details about the new range coming.
As we gallery stockists we normally get to hear about new products first and often obtain images of designs that are going to be sold under the gallery fireplaces brand.
Well we were the first to advertise the Firefox 5CB and Tiger clean burn stoves along with the Kooga.
We have had the Firefox and tiger in stock now for quite a few months and at long last the Koogas are coming into stock the second to third week of March.
We do have showroom display model and stock ones on order so our customers will be able to come and view 1st hand the brand new products.
The website will be updated next week with a price for the Kooga so we can start selling them now we know they are arriving, it has been frustrating waiting for them to arrive but believe me they are on the way.
So if you wish to see the new kooga stove from gallery with the silver legs it does make a nice feature to any contemporary or modern living space and being DEFRA approved can be used to burn wood in any smokless zone too, im pretty sure it should sell well too.

Firefox 5 Gallery Fireplace Stove in short supply

Monday, October 25th, 2010

The Firefox 5 multi fuel stove made by gallery fireplaces is again in short supply and we have had trade customers today on two occasions asking us if we can do a deal on 4 or more.
I knew last week there was a little problem when a company from Scotland called Smiddy Stoves rang me and asked if we could do trade price on them as Doughtys were out of stock of them and none were arrivng till November.
They did purchase four from us at our website prices as we do not discount them any further as they are already very cheap.
Today we have had two further calls from trade customers asking the same questions, we do only have 12 left in stock ready to sell which after this weekends sales pattern we will be lucky if we have any come Friday.
Asking questions as you do as to how come they were in short supply again after last years fiasco i was told they had ordered double what they sold in last years “heating season” and then told they had actually sold three times the amount which nobody could have predicted.
This has happened to all the regional gallery fireplace suppliers and no one has any left and as they are made in china and it takes six weeks to arrive we are all stumped.
So again we have a little problem with the supply of our best selling stove we do have a few left on 1st come 1st served basis so be quick they will not be around very long.

The Worst case of soot in a chimney i have ever seen

Sunday, October 3rd, 2010

I was sat in my office this morning have a good tidy up installing new printer and pc we have had delivered so we now will have another workstation set up as i am going to spend alot more time in the office as we have new driver starting.
Anway my mobile rang and it was Matt our local fitter who i know was doing a job in Ripley as our customer had collected a Firefox 5 Stove yesterday.
Anyway it went Mark have you got a 1000mm length of flue pipe in stock as the length the customer has is to short.
So off i went to the workshop and dropped it in to Victoria Road on the way back, when i arrived matt seaid come and have a look at this.
Wondering what he was going to show me on came his torch and pointed it through the soot door which was in the entry.
Swear words came out of my mouth i could not believe it it was as if someone had pebble dashed the inside of his chimney with soot and tar.
God knows how that had not caused a chimney fire it really was that bad, it was even running out of the soot door where it had become hot and had started to melt and run down.
The owner said he had even had his chimney swept which amazed me.
Now i am not 100% sure how to deal with this i have google searched it and it is called glazed creosote which can be removed only bu chemicals it says it is impossible to remove by brushing alone.
As i had a handfull of this shiny black stuff i can testify that to be true it would never come off hjust brushing it.
So Matt has advvised him not to use the new stove until a profeesional sweep has taken a look and a course of action agreed.
Im glad i called in it really opened up my eyes to how bad a flue can get it just goes to show what will happen to your flue without regular maintenance.

What makes the Firefox 5CB a Clean Burn Stove

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

The new DEFRA approved firefox 5cb (clean burn) stove really is a nice stove and for £375 an absolute bargain too anyway i thought i would let you into a little bit of technical info as to why it is a clean burn appliance.

The Firefox 5CB uses the down burn principle unlike conventional stoves where the flame path rises up to the baffle plate in the top of the stove, circulates around the baffle then out through the flue outlet.
The down burn stove has a throat at the bottom of the firebox.
Beehind the back back brick is a combustion chamber that has its own air supply, the flame passes up into the firebox then down into the throat, it then enters the combustion chamber where it is injected with pre heated air.
This causes a rise in temperature burning off smoke particles (hence the name clean burn) creating cleaner emissions. After entering the combustion chamber the hot gasses circulate around tjhe inner baffle and out round the flue outlet.
The secondary and tertiary air supplies create the clean burn function; htese air supplies are not adjustable.
The primary air supply controls the burn rate and there is a fixed primary air bleed on the door located above the primary air slide.
The Firefox 5CB Clean Burn Stove has been extensively tested and meets all the requirements necessary to burn wood in smoke controlled areas and is DEFRA approved.
If the appliance is installed, operated and regularly serviced correctly it will offer many years of reliable service.
To buy ones of these fantastic stoves just visit our stoves section and click on DEFRA approved there all in there.

Regular maintenance for Solid Fuel Stoves and Fireplaces

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

So you have your new solid fuel fireplace or stove installed the last thing on your mind is maintenance and cleaning of chimneys and flues etc.
Most of the time this is very seriously overlooked and a lot of customers do not even have the chimney swept before installing a new real fire fireplace or stove.
As most people are aware fitting of a solid fuel fuel appliance must be done by HETAS registered fitter or have it signed of by Building Control inspector from your local council.
Bizzarely after that there is no further regular maintenance required by law, in my opinion this is very shortsighted as burning solid fuel can also create carbon monoxide which is a silent killer if the fuel is not burnt correctly i have read online about a death from a blocked flue for a Kitchen Range.
There are no regulations currently that say solid fuel fires of any type must be serviced and chimneys swept once a year. It would be good to have a regime in place or guide line so people know how often to service the fireplace, flue etc they have.
I understand most people would detect a fully blocked flue but how often have you heard people say sometimes the fire blows back smoke into the room, normally there is an underlying reason for this do not leave it have it investigated by HETAS registered fitter.
As a guide chimneys should be swept once a year by a decent sweep try the NACS which has sweeps numbers all over the uk they will give you free advice as to how often you will need it cleaning depending on the fuel you are burning.
As the flue is the only source for the toxic fumes escaping make sure it is in good condition so smoke does not enter your property right through the run of the chimney if in doubt have a chimney sweep test it for you and if found to be faulty it can always be lined.
So enjoy your winter fires and as good sound advice get your chimney swept just as you start to reuse the fireplace after the Summer so if you do have birds nest etc in the flue it will be removed before you light the fire.

Happy Burning and just to let you know our local sweep is cleaning my stove Thursday next week

Time to spring clean your multi fuel stove

Tuesday, June 29th, 2010

It is the time of the year now you are not using your multi fuel stove to dismantle it and give it a thorough good clean, i know when its winter time and in use every day we all empty the ashpan but really not much else.
Anyway as the weather is a lot warmer let me explain to you how to give it a really good clean
First off get some clean newspaper and cover the whole are in front of the fire, remove any ash on the grate and drop it into the ashpan.
Remove the Hood thats sits on top of the firebricks and place on the paper then take out the firebricks and finally the grate and ashpan.
Hoover out any ash left in the stove and then inspect for any damage to the casting.
Take outside the baffle hood and the grate and give them a good wire brush loosening and removing any dirt these can then be sprayed with Heat temp paint if required.
Do the same with the firebricks using a soft brush and hoover ashpan check for any cracks or damage and repair or replace if needed then its all ready to be refitted.
Lightly hoover around the rope door seals checking for any fraying or if its coming out of its groove reglue back in place.
Give the glass a good polish with soot and tar removing glass cleaner to leave it as clean as a whistle, finally just give the outside a hoover off and add a drop of oil to the hinge pins and now your stove is all ready for a good winters use ahead.

Seasoned logs for all your Fireplaces and Stoves

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Nothing could be further from thoughts about lighting my Tiger Plus multi fuel stove as i sit in my office and the sun is shining and i have radio on whilst completing a mound of paperwork ive left to build up.
What prompts this article is a phone call from Paul asking me if i want another lorry load of logs dropped off at our warehouse in Langley Mill.
Now lucky for me i have some spare crates for them to be tipped into so i can then move them with the forklift before i manage to get round to spliiting them with my hydraulic log splitter.
At work i have 4 large wooden crates filled with Split logs and my woodshed at home is filled to the Brim with seasoned logs but im still sure i need more for the next Winter.
Now really is the ideal time to start to buy and prepare your logs for the forthcoming Heating Season as they take 6 months air drying time to be perfect for burning.
Wood when fresh cut has a high moisture content and until it is split into logs retains most of this
Also it is always a good idea to buy your chosen logs now as they are always cheaper in the Summer and this is the time most tree work is being undertaken and most tree fellers are glad to be rid of as demand is not as high.
In Winter how many times did you find out everytime you needed a tonne bag or lorry load that they were short in supply and you had to wait a while
So to keep your solid fuel fireplaces and stoves roaring away in Winter why not give your local log supplier a ring and see if you can get yourself a bit of a bargain on your winter fuel.
If you live within 20 miles of us i can always pass you pauls number and he can sort you out as many logs as you require.
Right im off for an ice cold drink all this talk of roaring fires is bringing me out in a sweat
