What do we seal the agean Limestone Surround with is quite a common question we get asked from time to time. We do recommend after fitting your limestone mantel to seal it with a stain stop so it forms a permanent barrier against dirt. Some of the surrounds already come pre-sealed but we always suggest resealing after fitting.
As Limestone is a very porous material after fitting we would normally clean surround down then leave it to dry for a few days until it is completely dry then clean of any dust with clean cloth and then apply a good quality stain stop such as Lithofin Stain Stop Sealer this is ideal for limestone, marble and travertine. This product will soak in to the limestone and will leave a slight sheen to the surface but after it has been applied its ready to be used when dry and a barrier against dirt etc will have been formed it will have soaked into the stone so wont sit on the top like a varnish etc.
This sealer will stop water etc from marking the limestone but be very careful with tea coffee red wine and particular fruit juices or vinegar etc as any spillage if left to sit on the surface still cause unsightly stains its common sense really you wouldn’t spill those on your wooden table and leave it to soak in just mop it all up asap after a spillage.
Stains are hard to remove from limestone as we have said its very porous and just sucks the liquid straight into the stone making it very hard to remove so leaving it untreated is not really an option so please after fitting one of our surround get it sealed at your earliest opportunity.
One word of advice when cleaning in the future is not to use furniture polishes or waxes as these can darken the limestone just use clean cloth with a little water on they dry straight off.

We have taken delivery today of one of our new ranges of Fireplace Surround and the finished article has arrived this morning. It is called The Cameron Oak Surround and is available in two standard sizes of 48†and 54â€. We also can offer a made to measure service on this surround made to your dimensions and finished in either Light Oak or Dark Oak. If any of you have seen our oak Lincoln and liked it the Cameron is sure to be another good seller as its very similar in design but the Cameron is just like a big Brother it really is chunky. It is handmade from 100% Solid oak and has a 3†thick solid wood shelf making this surround the chunkiest we do. The legs are 7†wide and really match the thickness of the shelf. We are going to list it today as a timber surround on its own and will photograph it with all our numerous arched and tiled inserts in the near future and sell them as packages for gas, electric and solid fuel use. In the meantime if you do want a package price with any of our inserts please don’t hesitate to contact us and we can work the price out for you before they have been listed on our website.

Here at Cast and Pine Direct we offer a good range of Timber Surrounds available in Pine and Oak and even a few in Veneered MDF. We keep a good amount in stock ready to be delivered in various sizes from the 42†Lincoln and Bedford to the Large Corbel surround in 55†from our standard stock range.
All these surrounds can be supplied in our own antique stain and then waxed by hand to create the lovely patina we achieve on them or we can simply supply unfinished for you to paint or stain yourself.
We also offer a full made to measure service on most of our surrounds and this starts at an extra £25 for simple changes to openings and shelf widths etc. We can also add this made to measure service on to our package prices so you can that get a bespoke mantel at a bargain package price, have a hearth made to measure too and as you can see no other company offers this bespoke service at package prices. Other Companies will just try to sell you what they have in stock and only what they can obtain, we are different to all the others if you want a 56.2†mantel and hearth instead of a 54†we can supply it no problem at all. It will take a little longer to arrive to you but “all good things come to ye who waitsâ€
We can also offer a fully bespoke service creating a fireplace surround you may have seen in a magazine or even copy an original design you have in another room. These will all be handmade and finished to any colour you choose we also a have a full French polishing service so we can match most colours and designs in a range of exotic timbers.

It gives me great pleasure telling you that the Wooden Fireplace of the month goes to The Crown and Oak Brompton Package this is a real bonus for us as we have only added the Solid Oak Brompton about 8 weeks ago and to beat our Oak Lincoln Mantel into second place is no mean feat.
The Crown Packages we have sold have mainly been Half Polished but we have sold 3 in Black but none in Full Polish finish. Most have been for gas use but all the black ones were for solid fuel use. This particular Fireplace has a shelf width of 54†as it’s very tight to use a 48†mantel with the crown however we offer it with a lot of our other arches such as the Lytton, Jubilee and Henley.
The Oak Brompton surround is made form 100% solid oak finished in a natural oiled finish to enhance the beauty of this lovely wood, it is very traditional in style and is modelled on a Flat Victorian Style Surround which we also do in Pine called the Worcester and in Agean Limestone Called the Brompton (hence the name). It is perfect in proportion and has just enough decorative detail with a moulding around the foot and small moulding on the leg section.
Really I shouldn’t be surprised how well this surround has sold over this month as its terrific value for money as it really is Solid Oak. It is available as a package for use with Gas, Electric and solid fuel so I am sure we have the perfect Victorian styled Oak Fireplace for you.

The Second featured item of our new Modern Fireplaces is the Langley Solid Oak Surround. This Oak mantel has no overhang on the shelf so it is made in a box section style that is very simple. Made form 100% solid American oak and finished in a natural oiled finish it is a very simple design fireplace surround and is perfectly suited to Modern Day Living. With a size of 52†shelf width and an opening of 34†x 34†this surround will take a lot of our Larger Arched Inserts. On our Website we have listed them as Gas, Electric and Solid Fuel packages such as the Coronet and Langley solid fuel package this shows how the Modern surround can be mixed with a simple arched fireplace to create a Cast iron fireplace package that has modern appeal.
This design of surround is also suited to electric and gas packages with the simple Granite Panel and hearth set and we have listed those too in Our Modern Fireplaces Sections which comes with the Fires and a choice of trim and fret to personalise the look you are after. Also available is the new Gallery Aurora high output glass fronted fire which has also been photographed with this mantel so as you can see from the photos below this surround will work well with a lot of the current range we offer that’s why we are sure we will have a great selling surround to offer our customers a good choice when choosing a firplace for your home.

As you may know we have had a range of Modern Surrounds made to compliment our ever increasing range of fireplaces these timber mantels are made from mainly 100% solid oak. We have started adding these new items and I would like to introduce you to them through our Articles section.
The 1st mantel is my personal favourite and is the Diamond Oak surround, made from 100% solid American oak and finished in a natural oil finish this surround just oozes class. With its small triangle corners that are set so the grain runs in a different direction and its three-tiered structure it is very modern in design but works well with traditional fireplaces too.
We have added this surround as packages to our website available in Gas, Solid Fuel and electric with various items such as the Coronet and Diamond Gas Package which is the coronet arched fireplace set and Diamond mantel. When we did the pictures for this item I wasn’t sure how it was going to look mixing two different styles but once we had set it up I knew straight away it was a great package.
Also of interest for customers with no chimneys and just flat walls is the Granite Panel and Diamond Electric Package this fireplace can be mounted on a flat wall or chimney breast without having to make an opening for the electric fire as it can be flush mounted so any room can have The Diamond Oak Mantel as a Fireplace Package.
The Diamond can also be fitted with Down Lights for that extra feature to light up the granite or cast iron on any night just have a look at the photos below of the two items we have featured and see what you think to one of our new surrounds. The Malton Oak Veneered Victorian flat panel style surround has been added to our website today it’s available to buy online now in many different packages for gas or solid fuel use. This Oak Veneered Mantel will quickly become a good seller its made from MDF so its very stable and is designed on the popular Brompton Limestone. It is a great alternative to solid oak as with it being Veneered it really keeps the price down by around £200 at least so people who want the look of oak but without the price are sure to find this mantel a real winner. I personally think this surround looks best with a simple arched insert such as the Crown and Malton it really looks good and makes a perfect gas package with the Half polished cast iron insert.
Tiled Inserts have not been left out of our packages either and we also offer this versatile surround with a choice of tiled fireplaces such as the one shown in the photo below it shows the Toulouse Highlighted insert with the Tulip Burgundy / Ivory tiles I’m sure you will agree it makes a great package for Gas, Electric or even Solid fuel use. As with all our packages you can mix and match inserts hearths etc so if we don’t have on our website exactly what you are looking for give us a ring and we can create the perfect fireplace package for you.

A new addition to our Timber mantel range has arrived it is a smaller design on the popular Lincoln Pine Mantel this wooden fireplace surround is one of our best sellers so we have decided to have made a 42†version which is to fit our smaller arched fireplaces for customers whose chimney breast is to small to take the 48†Version. I am Sure it will be used on smaller chimney breasts in Bedrooms, living rooms etc where the only other small timber mantel was the Bedford which is a Victorian corbel design surround.
The Pine Lincoln is a very simple designed surround with very clean straight lines and no decorative detail to it at all. I think this really works well with the plain Coronet Half Polish Insert which again is a very simple arched fireplace available in Black or in Half Polish as shown below.
This package is available in Black and Half Polish it is available for use in Gas, Electric or solid fuel use and we will be listing these packages on our website early next week.
We also sell it with the Regal arch for those customers who prefer a more decorative arched fireplace.

Taking Care of your Timber Surround is quite really a simple matter for starters its not ideal to let your wooden fireplace become wet in any way and try to avoid sitting hot cups on the mantel shelf to avoid the white ring effect.
Pine Surrounds are made from solid pine timber, which is classed as a soft wood they are stained with our own hand mixed Water based stain made from Van-Dyke Crystals we apply 1-2 coats of stain depending on the colour we wish to achieve we then leave to dry and add a hand waxed finish using a Morells wax to get the look we want.
For upkeep of your Pine Surround you should only need to lightly wire-wool surface using 0000 grade then reapply a coat of wax and buff to the sheen you require this should be done once a year or more often if required over the years the surround will build up a patina which will look more and more like antique pine this is the true finish of pine and looks great.
For our Solid Oak Surrounds such as the Oak Stourhead its finished with an Oiled finish such as finishing oil or Tung oil this is 2-3 coats of this oil is applied prior to delivery of these surrounds and are quite water resistant. You should re-oil surrounds every year using a good quality Oil and apply with a clean cloth and work the oil into the surface of the Wooden surround remove any excess after 10 minutes and then let the oil soak into the timber once its dried that’s all that has to be done and its ready to be refitted.
