Victorian Style Fireplaces from Cast and Pine Direct

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

So we often get asked what is a Victorian fireplace well basically the answer is a fireplace made in the reign of Queen Victoria 1819-1901 (Longest reining monarch) this period spans so many different decades it really does define a great era not only for fireplaces but for the shaping of things and items in general.
The Victorians were the masters of Cast iron and there are so many fantastic designs of fireplaces that a lot of our replica fireplace have been cast on an original.
Here at Castfireplaces we do not supply original victorian fireplaces but we suppy reproductions of this fabulaous era.
A fireplace of this great age varied from room to room from a plain combination or open grate in the servants quarters to a grand fireplace with decorated slate or Marble.
Any timber fireplace would always be painted (not like todays stripped wood fashion) and quite often grained or marbelized to match the more expensive original item.
In the bedrooms of any victorian house you would find a smaller combination fireplace with a shelf that was designed to be used as a heat source not just for display.
So many houses have lost these fantastic features over the years and in particular the 1970s so we do offer a good range of smaller bedroom fireplaces to compliment the larger ones we do.

New Oak Fireplaces added to our website pages

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Today after delivering a load of fireplaces i have had a rest from altering prices on our new site and have added some of the new images we have for our new items in particular two oak mantels called the Cameron and the Cubley both are quite chunky and we have put them together as fireplace packages for use with solid fuel, gas and electric use.
When i look at these photos i cant help but think that they will become great sellers and we have created again some of the finest quality fireplace surrounds that are available on or offline.
As normal when we make an oak surround we only use solid american oak and finish them with a lovely finishing oil from Liberon which seals the fireplace surround and gives it a slight patina.
We find this finish is far superior to the Waxed look available from others and we believe you will then see the beauty of oak as how you were meant to see it in all its natural glory.
Anway theres not long to wait now untill you will be able to view these surrounds and purchase them via our website shop so please keep checking back for what is sure to be the best quality at the best price for all you solid oak fireplaces.

Largest Timber Fireplace Surround we have ever made

Friday, October 30th, 2009

We have today finished the largest timber surround we have ever made it is based on the Worcester Pine mantel and has an opening size 54 inches wide and 50 inches high.
The customer rang us after reading one of our articles as to whether we could make such a surround to fit around this opening shown below.

The customer emailed me this after me questioning opening sizes were right

Yes it’s a very big opening. We’ve just discovered an original Cotswold stone fire chamber behind a plasterboard wall in our house and had it opened up and a stove put in (see attached picture).

The opening is big, but needs finishing off somehow so we are thinking about using a pine surround.
So have a look at the photo they sent me

As you can see something does need to be done to hide some of the rugged stone work and Mr Cottingham has requested the mantel to be unfinished so they can match it too some existing polished timber they have.
This mantel is around 60 inches high with the mantel on so it is quite a strange looking item but im 100% sure when fitted in place on the customers chimney breast it will finish of what will be a great looking fireplace.
After Mr Cottingham has fitted it I will ask him if he can send us a photo of the finished item so we can add this to this article for you to compare.
Don’t forget we offer a full made to measure service for any timber mantel whether it be in MDF Pine Oak or any timber you fancy so please email or ring us for a quote for our great bespoke service

Where are all these Fireplaces and Stoves going to Fit

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

Yet more Multi fuel stoves have arrived yesterday (Wednesday) and we have had more arrive on Tuesday this week, stock seems to be coming and going at an alarming rate not that I am complaining. Our Factory is groaning at the seams and 1700 sq ft is a lot to fill with fireplaces we even have more items in stock now than some of our suppliers during this busy time of year.
We continue to keep our supply times to within ten days as we have increased all our fireplace stocks to keep up with demand.
Timber mantels have been arriving from the workshop daily in vanloads and we are now well ahead on manufacture time to keep our stocks high.
This also is coupled with two new oak design timber fireplaces that will be going on our website as soon as I can get some time to add them.
They look absolutely fantastic and are sure to big sellers over the next few months and we will be listing them as packages and on there own to buy too so please keep checking back.
As with all our Timber Surrounds we can manufacture to any size to suit your requirements.
Stu who does a lot of our fireplace deliveries is also very good at website design and pc admin work and is doing work now on our website alongside our design company to get this update ready for going live wait till you see what we have done it works great and we are just ironing out the small creases for it to go live as most items are being listed manually its very time consuming but it will not happen again I am assured.
Anyway that’s the boring bit out the way still no sign of the new arrival in our family (Stuart and Theas 1st Baby) so I am on long distance deliveries again today in Devon and The South West so Rhian is in charge of office and all orders I’m just the delivery man but that’s the most important part of our job and I love meeting our customers so if you do get me on your delivery do not tempt with tea biscuits or cakes as I may stop for ages chatting plus I’m on a diet too must keep up the hard work.

Jubilee and Pine Corbel best Selling Wooden Fireplace

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Wooden fireplaces have been popular this month and it is our very own Pine Corbel Surround that has been the best seller this month with the Jubilee arched insert.
We manufacture this pine corbel surround as a budget mantel but its made from solid pine timber and finished with the same stain and wax we use on our premium mantels i decided over 12 years ago when working at Derwentside to introduce a simple plain corbel surround into our range that would compliment an arched fireplace.
We have made this surround ever since then and over the years have sold 1000s, which makes it our most popular surround ever.
It’s available in three different sizes 48” 51” and 54” so its very versatile and can be used on some of the smallest chimney breast because we can manufacture this surround in any bespoke made to measure surround.
The Jubilee and Pine Corbel Package can be used for gas, electric and solid fuel use and with prices starting at £475 is priced to offer outstanding value and is one of the reasons why this mantel sells so well.
Just because we class it as a budget mantel does not mean its an inferior product we also supply this mantel to a few property developers who use this with a simple or decorative arch (see other photos in website category) to get a Victorian styled fireplace for their renovations so take a good look at this fireplace and see if you want to take advantage of this months best selling wooden fireplace.
Keep looking back to find out which stove has been last month’s best seller

Timber arriving for our Wooden Fireplace Surrounds

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Somebody in our office namely me decided it would be a good idea to order a lorry load of wood for our Timber Surrounds so we can make the Pine and Oak Mantels we manufacture cheaper for our customers to buy we are not cutting back on quality just cheaper timber price for buying in Bulk.
This at the time seemed a very good idea so a good friend of mine who is a timber importer ordered a “couple of packs” as he called it. I had forgotten how big and how much timber there is in these packs until he asked me where it was going when it arrives on Monday.
Needless to say my forward planning is now in overdrive and thanks to the people next door to us who make furniture frames it is now being stored in there timber racks until we can process it.
All our Timber Surrounds we make are made in Solid Pine and Solid Oak so you can rest assured they are made from the best timber and hand finished in a waxed or oiled patina which suits the wood they are made from and we really think they are some of the best quality to be found in any shop on the high street or online.
As we have said before we can custom make any size surround and alter any dimensions to suit a particular fireplace or Chimney Breast.
There are not many firms who offer this service so why put up with a standard size Mantel when for very little extra you can have one made to measure.
So if your not sure with any sizes don’t hesitate to give us a ring I am sure there is something we can sort out for you

Made to measure fireplace timber mantels

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Ever since we had our last post about Made to Measure Fireplace Surrounds we have seen an increase in orders for such products.
Stuart and Darren who make most of these surrounds have been kept quite busy making bespoke mantels and Daz said to me it makes a nice change having to do odd sizes and different dimensions (I am sure he would much rather build a Sauna in our showroom like he suggested).
Because we manufacture ourselves the vast majority of the Surrounds we sell means that we can offer these bespoke mantels at prices that are not too expensive in relation to our standard items.
Some of the work we have one this week include an Oak Brompton Mantel with no rebate so it fits flush to the wall when fitting around a wood burning stove.
We have also made a made to measure Worcester Pine Mantel which will be used to fit around an existing arched fireplace that the customer already had and wanted to use in their house renovation.
These are just a couple of examples of what we can do at Cast and Pine so if you do see one of our mantels and it isn’t the right size for you just contact us and we can always make you a bespoke surround at prices that are unbelievable.
We will be adding a simple print off Easy measuring form so you can just fill in dimensions and email it us back so then we can easily manufacture your new surround to your sizes.
Right off to get my gun I’m going shooting this afternoon so if you need any help the lovely Rhian is here to help you.

Fireplace Mantels and Surrounds What a choice

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

One of the ranges we have on our website is dedicated to Mantels and Surrounds this is split into three sections so our customers can navigate round them easily going straight to each section. These items are split across the following Sections

Timber Surrounds this is where we have all our fireplace surrounds in various styles and manufactured from woods such as Pine, Solid Oak and a few MDF Veneered Oak. We can offer made to measure sizes in all of our surrounds except the Malton so if we don’t have the exact size you are after I am sure we can make it for you and made to measure prices are not that much more expensive. Also if you have seen a design elsewhere let us knows and we can price that up for you too in any wood.

Cast Iron Mantels We only stock Gallery fireplace surrounds as most of the others on the market are of inferior quality so we don’t have a very big range just the Palmerston in 48” and 54” offered in Black or Full Polish but it makes a nice alternative to wood or Stone.

Limestone Surrounds this section seems to have grown and grown over the past couple of years and gallery are always introducing new stone surrounds. The Quality of this natural product is second to none and the range of designs that we offer cannot be matched by. From plain simple designs to ornate Limestone surrounds that would fit in any drawing room we have a stone fireplace surround for you. These are truly a natural 100% product made from solid limestone.

These items listed above our just for the individual surrounds as we realise at Castfireplaces that just changing the surround it gives a whole new outlook on any fireplace so have a browse and see if you get any inspiration.

Harrogate Fireplace Should be every two years

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Last week saw the Fireplace show on again at Harrogate with all the usual suspects attending it is getting very similar every time you go. I think it is about time and with the current economic condition that is was postponed for a year and then make it very two years.
This I think would generate more interest in the show and then we would all have more incentive to attend and see what new products are being offered.
Here at Cast Fireplaces we never stop searching for new products to add to our ever expanding range and will be adding a new range of Decorative gas fires and a few more timber mantels we have had made to compliment the range we already offer.
I really do enjoy listing new products and featuring them on our website as its always interesting to see how customers respond to these new items most are warmly received and we take orders from the start others are a little slower and seem to have snowball effect such as our own Pine Corbel Surround designed originally as a budget pine mantel it now is one of our best selling surrounds and continues to be offered on our website 12 years after I first designed it whilst working at Derwentside in Belper.
Coming from a Furniture and Kitchen manufacturing background I can put ideas into a product and working closely with my surround man together we can always manage to make some sort of sample for our customers to view and have even had a few in Limestone and MDF designed to an idea we have, we will have more news on those products when they arrive at our factory from the China Factory.
One of these products you can view is the Ripley Agean Limestone Surround So if you want anything unusual making in timber we can do it and you never know it could become a fireplace other people want too.
