VICTORIAN FIREPLACES
Cast and Pine Direct specialize in selling Victorian
Fireplaces. The term Victorian fireplaces is associated
with fireplaces that are from the Victorian era of 1837-1901.They
are the most common type of fireplace that are found in many
houses.
We sell the Gallery range of cast fireplaces which have been
designed and reproduced from this great era.
Victorian Fireplaces are made from cast iron and normally
are used with a pine Victorian style surround such as the Bedford
or Worcester both are classic designs.
As the
Victorian era progressed, design and fashion changed. In the
parlour, the standard grate began to be replaced by fireplaces
with a wooden mantel coupled with a cast iron decorative insert.
The back panel, which was similar in size to today's reproductions,
helped to radiate the heat and allowed for a number of elaborate
designs, which added to what was, by now the main focus of the
room.
Typically these cast iron back panels would include a panel
on each side, into which a set of decorative ceramic tiles could
be inserted. This increased the natural grand look of the cast
iron and allowed standard designs to be personalised by the customer
as the tiles installed create a whole new look to the fireplace.
Each Victorian fireplace can change in looks just with the tiles
which are available in 45 different styles and colours.
A Cast iron fireplace can be used for solid fuel use electric
and gas use, most of the tiled insets are designed around the
traditional 16" back so have a good sized area for burning
solid fuel. We also do gas and Electric inserts for all our Victoria
fireplaces so they can be brought up to date in the ease of use
with gas and electricity without loosing any of the appeal to
the Victorian fireplace look.
The Victorian period saw the development towards the more
efficient burning of fuel. The introduction of register grates
and dampers to control the amount of air to the fore resulted
in the introduction of one piece cast iron insets which were
fitted behind marble surrounds. The early 19th century fire regulations
were controlling the construction of chimneys and were further
exercised by the almost exclusive use of cast iron and marble
products in the building of fireplaces.
Fireplaces continued to get smaller. The size and grandeur
of the fireplace was scaled to that of the room. Painted pine
and slate began to be used extensively as marble was becoming
too expensive. The Victorians would have found our love of stripped
pine almost amusing as it was a cheap timber and was always painted
or concealed.
Many of these design of fireplaces still survive to day in
English house and have been reproduced by Gallery Fireplaces
as they are still fundamental to the English house. The chimney
breast in an English house been and always will be the main focal
point of any room and there's no better way to grace it than
