Black leading a fireplace

When you hear the phrase ‘black leading a fireplace’, it may sound as though it’ll take a lot of time and effort, but it’s really simple to do these days.
It’s got nothing to do with lead either – that’s just an anachronism from olden times.
These days, it’d probably be more correct to call the process grate polishing, which sounds much easier to do.
All you need is a tube or can of blackening paste and a bit of elbow grease.
After covering the area and putting on some rubber gloves, you can start to apply the paste with a paintbrush or rag.
It may be best to do it on the back of your grate first, just in case it doesn’t look right first time.
Once the paste has been applied and rubbed in, leave it to dry for a bit and then come back to it with a soft brush so you can give it a good buffing.
If you’re happy with how your sample area went, set about doing the entire stove and leave it looking brand new.
