How To Choose The Correct Sized Fireplace Or Stove For Your Room

You have to consider many things when it comes to buying a fireplace or stove for your home. How it looks is just as important as the type of heating system in the modern era. There are plenty of options when it comes to the type of fireplace. Electric or gas? A wood burning stove, a multi burning stove or even an electric stove? These are all kinds that should be considered when purchasing.
Another important factor to consider when making your decision is the heat output in relation to the size of the room that you are planning to install the fireplace in. You want your whole room to be heated, so if the output is too small, you simply won’t feel the benefit. Fireplace efficiency has to be taken into account, or you could be wasting time and money.

Get the balance right

Ask yourself, what kind of fireplace do I need? Well, it’s all about striking the right balance. You want a style and type of fireplace that looks good, one that suits the room’s aesthetics. The kind of fireplace will come into consideration as well as an electric fire may suit the room’s design more than say a gas fire. Then, the most important decision is choosing a heating system that will be effective as well as efficient.
Too big?
You don’t want to be in a position where the room is too big, and the nominal output of the fire isn’t enough to heat the whole room. This means that you’ll resort to running it at its maximum output in order to keep the whole room nice and warm. This inevitably will cost you more money!
Too small?
On the other hand, if the fire has a good amount of power but is installed in a small room, it will work at the other end of the spectrum by running too low consistently. Again, this will reduce the fireplace’s efficiency. It will also waste energy and potentially create pollution in the process. This is due to the burning process not being complete due to the low levels of heat. So, fuel will be left unburnt, entering the atmosphere through the chimney.
Just right?
It’s imperative to strike the right balance by installing a fireplace that will allow you to heat your room properly, while the stove or fireplace operates as close to its nominal output as possible. That way you’ll get value for money and not waste energy while feeling the warmth.

How to find the right sized fireplace or stove for your room

To find your nominal output, first of all, you need to measure your room accurately. You do this by first measuring the width of the room, then the length and then the height.
Once you have the width, length and height measurements, you must multiply them together. The total should then be multiplied by 0.07. The end result is the nominal heat output that is best suited to your room, and this is what you should keep in mind when going to purchase a fireplace or stove.
Length (m) x Width (m) x Height (m) x 0.07 = Perfect nominal heat output in kilowatts (kW).

Size matters

So, you could say that size really does matter in this instance. You’re more likely to find a bigger fireplace in a living room for example with a smaller one in a bedroom. Another key point to remember is that electric fires need similar considerations, the electric load that the fireplace actually carries with it. It’s not necessary to consult an electrician before you go ahead and buy a fire, but it may be something to consider. If the electric load is going to be very high, you may have to pay an electrician to create a dedicated circuit to prevent overloading.

A final point is how insulated your home is. Usually, this can be worked out on how old the property is or whether you have had insulation work performed recently. If your home is poorly insulated, heat will escape quicker, meaning you’d need a higher output from a stove for example. A well-insulated home, usually a more modern property, will allow you to heat a room more gently.
So, once you know the output you need for your home, you can concentrate on finding the perfect style fire for your room and personality.
