A cast iron fireplace suits any room but is particularly most popular in bedrooms and living spaces. These are where they were traditionally found, and it is easy to see why. They not only look great but provide a great source of heating too.
They do hold heat well. However, it will take longer to heat up than other materials. Cast iron is a thick and dense metal and, because of this, when the fire has gone out, it will continue to radiate heat into your room for a while afterwards.
If you want to know how to clean a cast iron fireplace, then there are a few steps that you need to follow. First, ensure the fireplace is completely cool. Don’t try to clean it whilst it is still warm. You should then ensure that the surrounding area is covered to avoid a mess.
Then you will need to sweep away the ash from previous fires and any dust and debris. A dustpan and brush are the perfect tool for this, and you can use a vacuum cleaner to hoover up any remaining debris.
Black fireplaces just require a very light wipe over with a dry microfibre cloth. If you have any heavier markings, a high-temp matt black paint is required.
Polished fireplaces should be cleaned with WD40 or, if more rusty, a metal polish.
