Rust can appear on polished cast iron when moisture is left on the surface or damp air is circulating .
Light surface rust can often be removed simply using wd40 sprayed onto a clean cloth, but it is important to work carefully. Using a coarse abrasive or rubbing too hard may scratch the polished finish.

Make sure the fireplace is completely cold before you begin.
Clean and Dry the Fireplace
Remove loose dust with a soft brush or dry cloth.
The cast iron must be completely dry before treating the rust. Do not wash it with water, as moisture left on the surface may cause further rusting.
Protect the hearth, tiles and fireplace surround before applying the polish.
Try WD40 first
WD40 is always our first use it typically removes 80% of any light rusting simply spray onto the cloth and apply to the polished areas of cast iron and work away.
If this method removes the rusting its all done and nothing furthermore needs to be done. If rusting still exists follow the instructions for using a metal polish.
Apply the Metal Polish
Apply a small amount of metal polish to a clen cloth or nylon scourer if heavier rust is present and gently work it over the rust mark.
Use light pressure and concentrate only on the affected area. Wipe away the residue with a clean cloth and check the surface.
For more stubborn rust, use a small piece of 0000-grade wire wool with the polish. Although this is a very fine grade, it should still be used carefully to avoid scratching the cast iron.
Repeat the process gradually rather than trying to remove all the rust in one go.
Buff the Polished Cast Iron
Once the rust has been removed, wipe away any remaining product and buff the area with a clean, dry cloth.
This will remove loose residue and help restore the polished appearance.

What If the Rust Is Severe?
Light surface rust can usually be treated with metal polish, but deep rust or pitting may require professional restoration.
Stop if the cast iron is heavily corroded or the finish begins to look uneven. Aggressive sanding may permanently alter the polished surface.
How to Prevent Rust Returning
Keep the fireplace dry and avoid cleaning it with wet cloths or household sprays.

If water is spilt onto the cast iron, dry it immediately. Regular dusting and occasional polishing can also help you spot small rust marks before they become more difficult to remove.
