Can We Supply Spare Parts for an Original Victorian Fireplace?

Article Summary
Bars, hoods, ash pans, tiles and other cast iron parts are all available depending on the fireplace and what is missing.
If you send us a clear picture along with the sizes, we can usually work out what part you need or whether we can source something suitable.
Even if a fireplace is missing a few parts, it may still be possible to bring it back to life with the correct replacement pieces.

Yes, in many cases we can.
We’re often asked about replacement parts for original Victorian and Edwardian fireplaces, especially when someone has bought an old fireplace from a salvage yard, auction or renovation project and finds that something is missing.

We stock a range of fireplace spares, and depending on the fireplace, we may also be able to help source parts that will suit an original cast iron fireplace.
The best place to start is with a clear photo and some measurements.

What Fireplace Spares Can We Help With?

Depending on the fireplace, we may be able to help with parts such as:

  • Replacement grates and bars
  • Ashpans
  • Dampers
  • Cast iron firebacks
  • Clay backs
  • Solid fuel kits
  • Replacement fireplace tiles

Not every original fireplace will use exactly the same parts, so we wouldn’t recommend ordering something simply because it looks similar.
Older fireplaces vary considerably in size and design.

Send Us Photos and Measurements

If you have an original fireplace that needs a spare part, send us:

  • A clear front-on photo of the complete fireplace
  • A close-up of the missing or damaged area
  • The width and height of the opening
  • Measurements of the missing part if you have them
  • Photos of any existing matching parts

That normally gives us enough information to see whether one of the parts we stock may work.
If we need another measurement, we’ll tell you what to check.

Can You Supply an Exact Original Part?

Not always. With an original Victorian fireplace, the exact manufacturer may no longer exist and the fireplace could be well over 100 years old.
In some cases, we can supply a modern replacement that matches closely enough to get the fireplace complete and usable again.
The important thing is the size and fit.
We’d rather tell you we can’t find a suitable part than send something that looks right in a photograph but doesn’t actually fit the fireplace.

What About Replacement Fireplace Tiles?

Tiles are another common part that goes missing or gets damaged on old tiled fireplaces. If you’re replacing a full set, you have much more freedom because you can choose a new tile design that suits the fireplace.
You can see our range of fireplace tiles.

Matching one original tile can be more difficult, particularly if the original colour or pattern is no longer produced. Send us a photo and we can tell you whether we have anything close.

One Original Fireplace We Helped Restore

One customer contacted us after buying an original fireplace for £145 at a salvage auction. The fireplace itself was a bargain, but it was missing a set of bars and its tiles. After they sent us photographs and measurements, we were able to sort both. We had a suitable set of bars in stock and the customer chose a set of Jazz Ivory Lilac tiles from our range. We packed everything up and sent the parts out to them. That was a fairly straightforward one, but it’s a good example of why it’s always worth asking before assuming an old fireplace can’t be completed.

What If the Fireplace Needs More Than a Few Spares?

Sometimes an original fireplace needs more than a grate or set of tiles. If the cast iron is cracked, major sections are missing or the fireplace needs structural restoration, we’d recommend speaking to a specialist cast iron fireplace restorer. We can still help with the parts we stock, but there comes a point where restoration work needs someone who can properly assess and repair the original casting. If we can’t source the parts you need, or restoring the original no longer makes sense, we can also supply a new Victorian-style fireplace instead. You can browse our full range of fireplace packages to compare traditional and more modern options.

Looking for a Fireplace Spare?

Have a look through our fireplace spares first.

If you can’t see the part you need, send us some photos and measurements. We’ve been dealing with cast iron fireplaces for many years, and sometimes a part from a modern reproduction will also suit an older original fireplace. We can’t promise we’ll find every spare, but we’re always happy to have a look and tell you what we think will work. And if repairing the original isn’t practical, we can help you find a Victorian-style fireplace that gives you a similar look.
