Choosing a new fireplace is easier when you work through the practical details before deciding on the design. Start by checking your chimney, fireplace opening and available space. You can then choose the material, style and fuel option that suit your home.
Check Your Chimney and Fireplace Opening
Your chimney or flue will affect which type of fire you can use. A traditional Class 1 chimney may be suitable for solid fuel and many gas fires. Class 2 and pre-cast flues usually have fewer options. Read our guide to Class 1, Class 2 and pre-cast flues if you are unsure which type you have.
Flat-Wall Fireplaces
You can still create a fireplace feature if your room does not have a chimney, chimney breast or existing opening. Our flat-wall fireplace packages include electric and bioethanol designs made to fit against a flat wall. They are a good choice for newer homes, extensions, bedrooms and other rooms without a traditional fireplace recess.
Complete Packages or Individual Parts
A complete fireplace package is usually the easiest choice when buying a full fireplace. Depending on the design, a package may include:
You can also buy surrounds, cast iron inserts and hearths separately if you already have part of the fireplace or want to use an existing opening.
Choose Your Fireplace Material
The surround material will affect the colour, finish and overall style of your fireplace. Our fireplace packages include limestone, marble, solid wood and cast iron designs. Browse our full range of fireplace packages to compare the available styles.
Choose Your Cast Iron Insert
Many packages are available with either an arched or tiled cast iron insert. Tiled inserts can be customised with a choice of fireplace tiles, while cast iron finishes may include matt black, polished or highlighted detailing. Options will vary between packages.
Choose Your Fuel Option
Many of our fireplace packages are available for solid fuel, gas, electric or bioethanol. The right choice will depend on your chimney, gas supply and whether you want a real flame or an electric flame effect. Some packages also offer options such as a deeper solid fuel back, Nu-Flame gas fire or SLE35i electric fire. Our guide to fuel options for our fireplace packages explains the choices and the parts supplied with each one.
Choose Your Hearth
Depending on the package, you may be able to choose from granite, slate or tiled hearths. The correct hearth will depend on the fireplace and fuel type. Compatible options are shown on each product page.
Measure the Available Space
Before ordering, measure:
Check your measurements against the sizes shown on the product page. Do not choose a fireplace using the overall mantel width alone. The opening size and rebate must also be suitable.
Allow for Installation Costs
Remember to include fitting costs in your budget. Depending on the fireplace, you may also need:
Speak to your installer before ordering so they can check the fireplace dimensions, fuel option and fitting requirements.
