How to Fit Concealed Fixing Brackets to a Wooden Fireplace Surround

We supply concealed fixing brackets with many of our wooden fireplace surrounds, and they can also be bought separately if you already have a timber mantel that needs fixing securely to the wall. They’re designed to sit behind the legs of the surround, so once the fireplace is fitted you can’t see the brackets from the front. They also make it possible to lift the surround off again later if you need to decorate or get access behind it.

How Do the Concealed Brackets Work?

Each fixing uses two parts. One bracket attaches to the back or inside of the wooden fireplace leg. The matching bracket fixes securely to the wall. When both parts are positioned correctly, the fireplace surround is lowered into place so the brackets engage with each other and hold the mantel flush against the wall.

Where Should the Brackets Be Positioned?

The brackets sit behind the fireplace legs where they remain hidden once the surround is fitted. The exact position will depend on the mantel, so we’d normally offer the brackets up to the surround first and mark the fixing points before drilling anything. The existing fitting photograph on this page is useful here because it shows which part fixes to the mantel and which part fixes to the wall.

Fix the Brackets to the Mantel

Attach the right-angled brackets securely to the wooden fireplace surround. Make sure the brackets on both legs are positioned at the same height so the mantel will sit evenly once it is lowered onto the wall fixings.

Fix the Wall Brackets

Position the surround where you want it and mark the corresponding bracket positions on the wall. Use fixings that are suitable for the type of wall you are fixing into. Once the wall brackets are secure, carefully lower the fireplace surround into position so the two parts of the fixing engage. Check that the mantel sits firmly against the wall and remains level.

Can You Remove the Surround Again?

Yes. One of the main advantages of these concealed brackets is that the wooden mantel can be removed later by lifting it upwards and away from the wall. That can be useful when decorating or if you ever need access behind the surround.
