Why Use a Professional Fireplace Fitter

Article Summary
Gas fires, stoves and solid fuel fireplaces all have different installation requirements, so using someone properly qualified for the job is important.
They can check the fire, flue, ventilation and gas supply before fitting the appliance safely.
The chimney, hearth, clearances, ventilation and surrounding materials all need to be suitable before the fireplace is used.

A fireplace can look straightforward from the front, but the installation behind it can be quite different depending on the fireplace, fuel type and chimney. That’s why we always recommend using a professional fitter who is experienced with the type of fireplace or stove you’re installing.

Use the Right Fitter for the Job

For gas appliances, use a Gas Safe registered engineer. For wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves, we’d normally look for a HETAS registered installer with the right area of competence for the work being carried out. A good fireplace fitter will also understand how the hearth, surround, insert or chamber, chimney and appliance need to work together.

Why Fireplace Experience Matters

Traditional fireplaces aren’t all fitted in the same way. A cast iron insert, limestone surround and tiled hearth need a different approach from a stove package or an electric fireplace suite. Someone who regularly fits fireplaces and stoves is more likely to recognise these differences and know what needs checking before the installation begins. That can save a lot of problems later.

What Should the Fitter Check?

The exact checks depend on the installation, but they may include:

  • The fireplace opening
  • Chimney or flue condition
  • Hearth suitability
  • Clearances around the appliance
  • Ventilation requirements
  • How the surround, insert or chamber will be fitted
  • The requirements of the particular fire or stove

For gas and solid fuel installations, the fitter should also make sure the work meets the relevant regulations and manufacturer’s instructions.

Can We Help You Find a Fitter?

Yes. We have a Find an Approved Fitter page where you can enter your postcode and search for Cast Fireplaces-approved Gas Safe and HETAS fitters in your area. You’re not required to use one of our approved fitters, but if you’re unsure who to contact, it gives you a good place to start.

Before You Book the Installation

We’d recommend getting a few quotes and making sure the fitter has experience with the type of fireplace or stove you’re buying. If they need dimensions or product information before quoting, get in touch with us and we’ll provide what we can. A fireplace is something you’ll live with for years, so getting the installation right is just as important as choosing the fireplace itself.
