Cast Iron Fireplaces Frequently Asked Questions

What rooms suit a cast iron fireplace?

A cast iron fireplace suits any room but is particularly most popular in bedrooms and living spaces. These are where these types of fireplaces were traditionally found and it is easy to see why. They not only look great but provide a great source of heating too.

Do cast iron fireplaces hold heat?

A cast iron fireplace does hold heat well however it will take longer to heat up than other materials. Cast iron is a thick and dense metal and because of this, you won’t feel the warmth in your room as quickly. However there is something extremely beneficial for this as it will actually retain the heat for much longer.

Even when the fire has gone out, a cast iron fireplace should continue to radiate heat into your room for a while afterwards.

How to clean a cast iron fireplace

If you want to know how to clean a cast iron fireplace, then there are a few steps that you need to follow. To clean an iron fireplace, you need to ensure the fireplace is completely cool – don’t try to clean it whilst it is still warm. You should ensure that the area around is covered to avoid getting mess and dirt everywhere too.

First you will need to sweep away the ash from previous fires and any dust and debris. A dustpan and brush is the perfect tool for this and you can use a vacuum cleaner to hoover up any remaining debris. Then a wipe down with a cloth – using something like a methylated spirit to get it clean. It might need wiping down a few times to get everything removed. Then if you feel that the grate is looking a little dull, then use a commercial paste to restore some of its colour.
