How to Clean a Slate Hearth

Slate hearths are easy to maintain when cleaned with suitable products. Harsh chemicals and abrasive tools can mark the surface or alter its finish, so gentle cleaning is best. We offer a range of slate hearths in different sizes and finishes to suit traditional and modern fireplaces.

What You Will Need

  • A soft brush
  • LTP Stone cleaner
  • A soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge
  • A clean towel
  • Slate oil, if required

Make sure the fireplace and hearth are completely cold before cleaning.

Cleaning a Slate Hearth

Begin by removing loose ash, dust and dirt with a soft brush. Take care not to drag sharp pieces of debris across the slate. Apply LTP Stone cleaner following the instructions on the bottle. Wipe the hearth gently with a soft cloth or non-abrasive sponge. Avoid soaking the surface, particularly if the slate has not been sealed. Wipe away any remaining cleaner and dry the hearth thoroughly before using the fireplace again.

Removing Marks and Stains

Everyday marks can usually be removed during regular cleaning. For more stubborn stains, use a specialist product suitable for natural slate. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test it on a small, discreet area first. Clean spills as soon as possible, as liquids can soak into unsealed slate and leave a mark.

Removing Candle Wax

Allow the wax to cool and harden before carefully lifting it away with a plastic scraper. Do not use a metal blade, as this may scratch the slate. Any remaining residue can be treated with a specialist wax remover suitable for natural stone.

Restoring Dull or Lightly Scratched Slate

Once the hearth is clean and completely dry, apply a small amount of Slate Oil with a clean cloth. Slate oil can deepen the stone’s natural colour and help disguise light surface marks. Apply it evenly across the hearth and remove any excess. Deeper scratches may require professional repair.

Products to Avoid

Do not use:

  • Acid-based cleaners
  • Limescale removers
  • Bleach
  • Vinegar
  • Wire wool
  • Abrasive scouring pads
  • General-purpose oils or lubricants

These products may scratch, stain or discolour the slate.

Looking After Your Slate Hearth

Brush away ash and dirt regularly and clean spills promptly. Using suitable cleaning and care products will help protect the surface and maintain the slate’s natural appearance.
