A bioethanol stove contains a purpose-designed burner that holds liquid bioethanol fuel. Once lit, the burner creates a genuine moving flame and provides additional warmth to the surrounding room. Unlike an electric stove, the flame is not produced using LED lighting, projection or a screen. Its appearance will vary according to the size and design of the burner, the amount of fuel added and whether the flame can be adjusted.
Bioethanol does not produce the smoke, ash and soot associated with burning logs, so the stove does not need to vent through a conventional chimney. Some models can be fitted with a decorative flue pipe to create the appearance of a traditional stove installation, but this does not operate as a working flue. Depending on the model, features may include ceramic logs, reflective internal panels, adjustable burners, raised log-store bases and tools for controlling or extinguishing the flame.
Fuel must only be added when the burner is completely cool. Never refill a burner that is alight, warm or still giving off heat, and always follow the instructions supplied with the individual stove.

The Hamlet Solution range includes the Solution 4, Solution 5 and Solution 5 Wide. These models retain the familiar shape and proportions of a traditional stove, with several widths available to suit different fireplace openings.
Our OKO range includes compact, tall and wide stove designs. Selected models are also available on raised log-store bases, creating the appearance of a freestanding wood burner while using a dedicated bioethanol burner.
The Henley range includes compact and landscape-style models. The Dalewood Landscape has lower, wider proportions and a broad viewing window, while the Hazelwood Compact is suited to smaller spaces and fireplace openings.
The Capital Willow combines a traditional black stove design with a large glass viewing door and ceramic log fuel bed. An optional decorative flue can also be added to complete the stove appearance.
When comparing models, consider the external dimensions, viewing-window size, burner capacity, stated heat output and estimated burn time. Always check the individual product specification because these details vary between stoves.

Bioethanol stoves produce real heat as well as a visible flame. They are generally intended to provide additional warmth in the room where they are positioned rather than replace a complete central-heating system. The heat output varies between models and will also be affected by the room size, stove position, flame setting and operating time. A stove with a larger body does not necessarily have a larger burner or higher heat output. Burn time depends on the burner capacity, the amount of fuel added and the rate at which it is consumed. Selected burners also allow the flame to be reduced, which can affect both the appearance of the fire and how long the fuel lasts.
Bioethanol costs around £2.30 per litre. If one litre lasts for four hours, the estimated running cost would be approximately 58p per hour. If it lasts for six hours, this would reduce to around 38p per hour, or approximately 29p per hour if one litre lasts for eight hours. These figures are estimates because fuel consumption varies between stoves and flame settings. Check the burner capacity, expected burn time and stated consumption rate for the individual model before ordering.
Only use the type of liquid bioethanol fuel specified for the appliance. Do not use gel fuel, methylated spirits, petrol, lighting fluid or other substitutes.
A bioethanol stove can be positioned within a suitable fireplace opening, included as part of a complete fireplace design or used as a freestanding feature where the individual model allows. It can be placed within a brick, slate or tiled chamber and used with a suitable hearth and fireplace beam to create the appearance of a traditional stove installation. Some models can also be positioned against a flat wall, provided the manufacturer’s instructions allow this arrangement. A decorative flue pipe can be fitted to selected models for appearance. It does not need to connect to an existing chimney.
Check the stove dimensions and surrounding components carefully so the finished arrangement looks balanced. The stove must stand securely on a suitable surface with enough space around it to meet the stated clearances and allow safe access to the burner. The appliance should be used in a suitably ventilated room and kept away from curtains, furniture and other combustible materials.
If you already have an unused stove, it may be possible to convert it using one of our bioethanol conversion kits. A conversion kit allows you to retain the external appearance of the stove while replacing the original fire with a dedicated bioethanol burner. This can be useful where the stove is no longer connected to a usable chimney or where you no longer want to burn logs or smokeless fuel. Our conversion kits are available in different sizes and shapes to suit a range of internal fireboxes. The correct option will depend on the usable width, depth and height inside the stove rather than its external measurements.
The burner must stand securely and level, with enough space around and above the flame. Remove any loose ash, debris or combustible material before positioning it and follow the instructions supplied with the conversion kit. Not every stove will be suitable for conversion. Any existing gas appliance must first be safely disconnected by an appropriately qualified person.
