Aegean limestone finish explained

Aegean limestone originating from Turkey millions of years old it is off-white in colour with a slight gold fleck often described as a speckle effect. It is smooth to the touch, but as it is a natural stone, it can include fossils, small chips, markings, colour variation and natural surface flaws. These are not defects and are part of the character of the material and fireplace design.
This natural finish is one of the reasons Aegean limestone is such a popular choice with our customers. It has a soft, warm appearance that works well in both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Choose your own style of limestone fireplace surround

The great thing about Aegean limestone is how versatile it is. You can choose anything from a simple, minimal design to columned legs, bullseye detailing and ornate corbels.
With surrounds and mantels available from 42 inches to 56 inches, there is usually a surround to complement most chimney breasts and room styles.
The Brompton limestone fireplace is available in sizes from 42 inches to 60 inches and is by far one of our most popular choices. It has a simple but impressive design and looks stunning at the centre of many of our fireplace sets.
Portuguese limestone fireplaces with a back panel and hearth are also available as fireplace suites suitable for a more modern fireplace look with an inset gas fire or electric fire.

Using a Limestone Surround with a Stove or Fireplace

A limestone Mantel can be used in several ways depending on the type of fireplace you are creating.
Many customers choose a limestone mantelpiece to frame an arched cast iron insert, tiled insert or with a complete fireplace package. Others use limestone surrounds around a plain opening with a wood burner, gas, electric or bioethanol stove. It’s fine to use with solid fuel heat so do not worry about it cracking with the heat from an open fire or stove.
After assembly and fitting, the fireplace will need sanding and sealing, as the stone is very porous. For assembly, we recommend using a suitable marble glue, which can be purchased from our website.

Rebate and Flat Wall Options

Most limestone surrounds are supplied with a standard 75mm rebate, which is suitable for use with arched inserts, cast iron fireplaces, tiled inserts and similar fireplace setups.
If you are fitting a limestone mantelpiece onto a flat wall, or around a stove opening without an insert, you may need a no-rebate or closure strip option. This helps close the gap behind the inner legs of the mantel and gives a neater finish once fitted.
If you are unsure which option you need, it is always best to check before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

At Castfireplaces we have found LTP Mattstone sealer the perfect product for stone fireplaces, its simple to apply brush off with a soft brush first apply with a clean cloth and it soaks in to protect the stone. Get your installer to do this after fitting.

If used around a stove or mounted on a flat wall, these strips of limestone are made to remove the rebate so there is no gap between the mantel and opening.

Most people with a competence in DIY should have no issues. There are normally four parts to each mantel.
