How to Choose an Electric Fireplace Suite: Fire, Surround, Size & Style Explained

Article Summary
Electric fireplace suites do not need a chimney, flue or gas supply. Many can be installed against a suitable flat wall and simply require access to an electrical socket, although installation requirements vary by model.
Choose a suite that suits both the width of the wall and the proportions of the room. Measure the available wall space first and check the overall width, height and depth of the fireplace rather than looking only at the fire opening.
Most electric fireplace suites include a built-in electric heater as well as a flame effect. The flame display can usually be used without the heater, so you can enjoy the appearance of the fire throughout the year.

An electric fireplace suite can be one of the easiest ways to create a complete fireplace. Instead of choosing the fire and surround separately and then trying to make sure they work together, a suite brings the main elements together as one design. That still leaves plenty of choice. The size, style, surround and fire all need to suit the room you’re working with and the look you want to create.

If you’re ready to compare the fireplaces themselves, take a look at our Electric Fireplace Suites.

What Is an Electric Fireplace Suite?

An electric fireplace suite combines an electric fire with a matching fireplace surround. The result is a complete fireplace that’s designed to work together rather than being assembled from separate components. It’s a particularly useful option if you want the appearance of a proper fireplace but don’t want to build a media wall or install a traditional fuel-burning fire.

Why Choose an Electric Fireplace Suite?

For me, one of the biggest advantages is simplicity. You don’t have to start with a fireplace surround and then work out which electric fire will fit and suit it. The main parts have already been brought together, giving you a complete fireplace rather than having to choose each component separately.

Choosing the Right Size and Style

The suite needs to suit the room rather than simply fit against the available wall.
I’d look at:

  • Wall width
  • Room size
  • Ceiling height
  • Existing furniture
  • Fireplace position
  • Television position
  • The overall style of the room

A large fireplace can look fantastic in the right space but dominate a smaller room. A small suite can look lost against a very wide wall. If you’re starting with a blank wall, also think about how the fireplace will sit with the furniture and television.

A photograph of the room and some rough measurements are usually enough for us to start helping. Style matters just as much. A traditional mantel, marble fireplace or arched design can give you the appearance of a conventional fireplace, while a cleaner surround and simpler fascia can create a much more contemporary look. The fireplace needs to look right in the room, not just fit the available wall.

The Electric Fire

Our electric fireplace suites use Solution electric fires, the range we’ve chosen to sell exclusively. Depending on the suite, you’ll find different fire styles, fascias and fuel-bed effects.

I’d choose these as part of the complete fireplace rather than looking at the fire in isolation. A coal-effect fire can work particularly well with a more traditional fireplace, while a log effect gives you a different finished look.
If you want to know more about the flame technology, controls and wider range, we’ve covered those separately on our Solution Electric Fires page.

Electric Fireplace Suite or Media Wall?

This is something customers often compare. A media wall normally brings the television, electric fire and often storage or lighting together into one larger built-in feature. A fireplace suite is a simpler way of creating a dedicated fireplace. If you want the fireplace itself to be the main focal point and don’t need the full built-in media-wall arrangement, a suite may suit the room better.

If you’re considering the alternative, take a look at our Media Wall Electric Fires.

See the Complete Fireplaces Running

At Cast Fireplaces, we have complete electric fireplace combinations running on display.
Our Baverstock marble fireplace has a log-effect electric fire, giving you a more traditional arched fireplace appearance.
We also display the Barcelona with a black fascia and SLE40i coal-effect fire, which gives you a very different finished look.

Seeing the complete fireplaces makes it much easier to judge the proportions, finish and fuel-bed style than looking at the fire and surround separately. It also shows how much the surrounding fireplace can change the appearance of the electric fire itself.

A Simple Way to Choose Your Suite

Before ordering, I’d work through these points:

  1. Decide on the style — traditional, contemporary or somewhere in between.
  2. Measure the available wall — make sure the overall fireplace size works with the room.
  3. Think about the position — consider furniture, television placement and the rest of the layout.
  4. Look at the complete fireplace — choose the surround, fascia and fuel-bed effect together rather than separately.
  5. Check the product dimensions — use the measurements for the exact suite you’re considering.
  6. See one in person if you can — it’s much easier to judge the scale, finish and flame when the complete fireplace is in front of you.

If you’re unsure which option will work best, send us a photograph of the room and some basic measurements or come and see the displays at Cast Fireplaces.
