How to Choose the Right Limestone Fire Surround

A limestone fire surround can frame a stove, cast iron insert, fireplace chamber or decorative opening. Choosing the correct design and measurements will help it fit the room and the fireplace properly. Our limestone surrounds are made from natural Aegean limestone and are available in a range of simple and decorative designs.

Decide How the Surround Will Be Used

Before choosing a surround, think about what will sit inside it. You may be fitting it around a wood-burning stove, cast iron insert, fireplace chamber or decorative opening. What you plan to fit inside will affect the opening size and whether the original rebate will be used.

Choose a Style for Your Room

Limestone surrounds are available in both simple and decorative designs. A plain surround with clean lines creates a more understated appearance and allows the stove or insert to stand out. More decorative designs may include carved corbels, columns or traditional mantel details. Consider the size and style of the room, the width of the chimney breast and any original features in the property. The surround should look balanced without appearing too large or too small for the wall.

Check the Overall Size

Always check the full height and width of the surround before ordering. The mantel shelf should fit comfortably across the chimney breast, with enough wall space around the legs and shelf. Marking the outside measurements on the wall with masking tape is a simple way to picture the finished size. Do not check the mantel width alone. Look at the opening dimensions, leg width, shelf depth and overall height shown on the product page.

Check the Internal Opening

The internal opening is the space between the legs and underneath the mantel shelf. It must be suitable for the stove, insert, chamber or fireplace opening being used. If it is too small, the chosen fire may not fit. If it is much larger, the finished fireplace may look out of proportion.

Check the Rebate

The rebate is the space behind the inside edge of the surround. It allows the mantel to fit around a cast iron insert, fireplace chamber or another part of the fireplace that projects from the wall. Many of our limestone surrounds have a standard rebate, so always check the details on the individual product page. If the surround is being fitted against a flat wall without an insert or chamber, limestone closure pieces may be needed to fill the visible gap behind the inside edges of the legs.
Some of our surrounds are now also available with attached closures. These create a no-rebate option, making the surround easier to fit directly against a flat wall.

Natural Markings and Variation

Aegean limestone is a natural stone, so markings, fossils and slight colour variations may be visible. These features are part of the material and mean every limestone surround will be slightly different.
