How to Fit Concealed Fixing Brackets to a Wooden Fireplace Surround

Our concealed fixing brackets are a neat way of fixing a wooden fireplace surround to the wall without having visible brackets or screws on show.

We’ve sold this type of fixing for around 20 years and now have our own brackets made for us in the UK.

We use them on all of our wooden fireplace surrounds because they give a much cleaner finish than visible mirror plate style brackets.

What Comes With the Brackets?

Each set includes:

2 L-shaped brackets
2 offset wall brackets
4 small screws
4 longer screws and wall plugs

The small screws are for the wooden surround.
The long screws and wall plugs are for the wall.

Do not use the long screws in the wooden surround as they could come through the timber.

Where Do the Brackets Go?

For most wooden surrounds, we fit one bracket towards the top of each leg. For a larger or heavier mantel, we would normally use four brackets instead — two towards the top and two lower down.

1. Fix the Brackets to the Surround

Fix the L-shaped brackets to the inside of the fireplace legs. They should sit flush with the back edge of the surround.

Use the supplied small screws.

2. Put the Surround in Position

Stand the fireplace surround on the hearth in its finished position. Make sure it is centred and level.

Lightly mark the wall along the outside edge of each leg.

3. Mark the Wall Bracket Position

Measure the thickness of the fireplace leg. From your line on the wall, measure inwards by:

Leg thickness + 10mm

This gives you the outside position of the wall bracket.

4. Fix the Wall Brackets

Position the offset wall bracket so the L-shaped bracket will sit roughly halfway between the two bends. Drill the wall and fix the bracket using the supplied long screws and wall plugs. The supplied plugs are for a suitable solid wall.
If you are fixing into plasterboard or another type of wall, you will need to buy the correct fixings for that wall.

5. Fit the Surround

Lift the surround into position and lower the L-shaped brackets into the wall brackets. The surround should sit firmly back against the wall.

If it does not line up, lift it away and check your measurements rather than forcing it into place.

Why We Use Concealed Brackets

We prefer concealed brackets because once the fireplace is fitted you cannot see the fixings. There are no visible mirror plates or screws at the side of the mantel, giving the fireplace a much neater finished look. They also make it easier to lift the surround away from the wall again if you ever need to decorate behind it.
