How to Measure for a Fireplace Surround

Choosing a new fireplace surround starts with getting the measurements right. Whether you are looking at a natural stone surround or a wooden design, taking a few simple measurements before ordering will help you choose a surround that is the right size and suits your room.

Measure the chimney breast and hearth area
The first measurement to take is the width of your chimney breast or the wall where the surround will be fitted. The surround should complement the chimney breast rather than fill the entire width. As a guide, we recommend allowing at least a 1-inch gap either side between the edge of the shelf and the chimney breast. This helps the fireplace look balanced and prevents the surround from appearing too large for the space. It is also important to consider the hearth that the surround will sit on. In most installations, the hearth is around the same width as the surround, so you need to make sure there is enough usable space in front of the fireplace. Remember that the hearth will project into the room and may affect furniture placement and how you move around the space. A useful tip if you are unsure about the size is to cut a piece of cardboard to the intended hearth dimensions and place it on the floor. Leave it in position for a few days and see how you live with it. This simple check can help you visualise the finished fireplace and make sure the projection into the room works for you.

Measure your fireplace opening
Next, measure the opening that the surround will sit around.

Height of the opening
Depth available
Hearth dimensions
These measurements are especially important if you are fitting a cast iron insert, electric fire, gas fire or stove. It is always best to consider the surround, insert and fire together, as they all need to work well as a combination.

Can a fireplace surround be adjusted?
Many customers are surprised to learn that some surrounds offer adjustment options.
For limestone fire surrounds and marble fire surrounds, a number of designs have adjustable legs, which can allow the opening to be reduced by around 2 inches. This can be useful where the existing fireplace opening is slightly smaller than the standard surround dimensions. Further adjustments to the width may also be possible on some designs by carefully cutting the header section. This depends on the individual surround and should always be considered before fitting. If one of our standard designs is not quite the right size for your room or fireplace opening, we can often adapt the design to create a surround to your required dimensions. Measuring for a flat wall fireplace surround

For these installations, you may need either a 0-rebate mantel where available or closure pieces with a suitable surround. The correct option depends on the surround design and the type of fire being installed. Checking this before purchase can help ensure the finished fireplace has the correct appearance and fit.

Traditional properties often suit more detailed limestone and marble surrounds, while simpler designs can work well in modern interiors. Wooden surrounds can also provide a warmer, more traditional appearance and work well in many different room styles.
