What Are Limestone and Marble Fireplace Surround Closures?

Article Summary
Limestone and marble fireplace surround closures are three matching pieces that fill an existing 75mm rebate, allowing the surround to fit neatly against a flat wall.
The closures are glued into place before installation using marble glue.
Some surrounds are manufactured with no rebate, while others use separate closures to achieve the same finished result.

If you’re ordering a limestone fireplace surround or marble fireplace surround, you might notice an option for closures. These are used when you want to fit your surround against a flat wall without a rebate. Here’s what they are and how they work

What Are Fireplace Surround Closures?

Our Aegean limestone surrounds and marble surrounds are supplied with a standard 75mm (3-inch) rebate. This is a recessed area at the back of the surround, mainly designed to accommodate traditional cast iron fireplace inserts. Closures are three separate pieces of matching limestone or marble, made up of two side pieces and one top piece. These fill the existing 75mm rebate, giving you a surround with no rebate.

How Are Closures Fitted?

The three closure pieces are supplied separately and glued into the rebate at the back of the fireplace surround before installation. We use Marble Glue to attach the closures. This is a two-part adhesive suitable for limestone and marble, with a separate hardener that is mixed with the glue before use. It’s important to fit the closures beforehand, as there may not be enough room to fit them once the surround is against the wall.

Once glued in place, the closures aren’t designed to be removed. Trying to remove them later could damage the limestone or marble, so it’s worth deciding how you plan to use your fireplace before ordering.

Why Do Some Fireplace Surrounds Have a No-Rebate Option?

For some of our more popular limestone and marble surrounds, we have separate versions manufactured with no rebate at all. For other designs, we supply the standard 75mm rebated surround with matching closures instead. This means we don’t need to stock two versions of every surround.

Both options give you the same finished result.

Why Do Closures Cost Extra?

Closures require additional limestone or marble, which is why there’s an extra charge. Our purpose-made no-rebate surrounds also cost more than the standard rebated versions because they require additional material and manufacturing work.

Both options cost around the same. The difference is simply how the surround is supplied.

Which Option Do I Need?

OptionWhat you receiveBest suited for
75mm rebateA surround manufactured with a 75mm rebateTraditional cast iron inserts
No rebate (0mm)A surround manufactured without a rebateFitting directly against a flat wall
ClosuresThree separate matching limestone or marble pieces that you need to glue into the rebate before installationConverting a 75mm rebated surround for flat-wall fitting

If you’re planning to use a gas, electric or bioethanol fire, the rebate you need depends on the fire you’re using and how it will be fitted, so it’s worth checking before ordering.
